I've been eyeing this book on Amazon for awhile now. The book received fairly good reviews. I was disappointed!
A little less than half of the book is technical. The rest are easy screenprinting projects. I did learn some new facts, but their was a lot of vague spots ...
- Example - To determine the distance your light should be placed from image (during exposure), measure dimension of image. Ok, now what? Do I go by the width? Height? Do I combine height and width? It ends there with no elaboration.
I wanted more technical. I'm looking for a screenprinting troubleshooter. Mainly, I was hoping for a more in depth chapter on photo emulsion. It was mostly how to set-up for exposure and the rest was ... check the manufacturer of emulsion. What about exposing tips? How about tips on recognizing over exposure and underexposure?
I was hoping this would be my technical guide. I learned more from Lena Corwin's Printing by Hand. If anyone can point me in the direction of a more advanced/technical screenprinting book, please let me know.

I can only suggest "Print Liberation - A Print Primer". It has many more detailed pictures and a list of things that can go wrong and the reasons for them. e.g. your screen is under exposed if:
it has tons of pinholes
the screen is sticky after washing
if all the screen and not just the part you want to print washes away.
your screen is over exposed if:
the image is smaller or worse looking than you remember it
your emulsion is too thick if it washes off in skins.
But otherwise this book also tells you to refer to your own experimentation or the emulsion label for exposure time.
Thank you. I was looking at that book on Amazon. I was a little hesitant since their was no reviews. From you comment- that's what I'm looking for.
Tina, I'm new at screen printing, but have been following your blog for a while now. Check out this site http://www.wonderhowto.com/
how-to/video/how-to-set-up-a-screen-printing-darkroom-174602/
They have several videos; a lot of basic stuff is covered, but I did pick up some tips for exposing the different gauges of mesh. Hope you find it helpful.
Hi Tina, so sorry to hear about the book! I checked out that book from the library awhile back and also found it to be quite lacking. I bought this book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Silk-Screen-Printing-Craftsmen-Mathilda-Schwalbach/dp/0486240460/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217877748&sr=8-1. It was in the recommended reading list from Lotta's printing book (and I thought I saw is in Lena's as well), but I actually haven't even opened it yet to see how good it is! I'll try to take a look tonight and let you know how it is. I really want to start screenprinting but I just haven't gotten around to it yet!
I'm taking the author's class in long beach lol. We were required to buy the book.
