Amy Butler's Simple Leather-Handled Shoulder Bag

You can find this pattern in her book InStitches or her Sew-It Kit.

Fabric Used: I used medium weight cotton. The pattern calls for a sturdy cotton. I've used home decor weight and found it quite heavy. The fabric is doubled over so you don't want anything to heavy.

Changes: None so far. The pattern calls for 2 1/2" leather strips for handles. I haven't been able to find these anywhere. I'd really like to stick with the leather handles and not substitute, it gives the plain bag style.

If anyone else has substituted the handles for something else, I'd love to know of ideas.

Conclusion: This is a very fast and easy project. It's just as easy as learning to sew a pillow case. I made 2 bags within 2-2.5 hours.

Hmm, it is too bad that you weren't able to find the leather straps. Do you have a craft warehouse or maybe a leather specific shop? Or maybe you could find a leather handbag at a thrift store, or maybe a belt that you could reuse. Good luck!
